Porcupine Tree - Anathema Live in Athens 9/09/2010

Well, I have to say that I went to that Live just for Porcupine Tree, because it's one of my favorite bands ever.
However, Anathema were quite good. Some of the song they played were even better than the studio version ones. I was stunned when I realized that, no shit!
Steven Wilson and his "company" played ~2.5h for us. They were truly amazing! Well I was expecting more "old" songs but I'm quite satisfied with what I saw and listened. Good job, both of you. Looking forward to see P.T. in Athens someday SOON!

Pain Of Salvation (1984 – present)
Pain of Salvation is a progressive rock band from Eskilstuna, Sweden. The band is centered around lead vocalist / guitarist / composer / writer Daniel Gildenlöw.

Trademarks include concept albums focusing on social, environmental, philosophical, and emotional issues as well as songs that incorporate complex rhythms and time changes but retain flowing melodies.

The name "Pain of Salvation" was devised by Daniel Gildenlöw, whose intention was to incorporate the notion of balance, which he believed to be of vital significance, e.g. good and bad, light and dark, life and death; pain and salvation.

The band was formed by Daniel Gildenlöw in 1984 under the nick name Reality. The band used to participate in many music contests in their homeland of Sweden. The first EP, Hereafter, was recorded in 1996 under the monicker Pain of Salvation, which has been the name of the band since 1991. The Lineup of the band was the same for their first official full length album, Entropia(1997).

After the departure of Daniel Magdic for continuing disagreements with the others over committing to the increasing demands of the band, the band recorded One Hour by the Concrete Lake(1999), a concept album about the issues of nuclear power/waste, disposition of indigenous peoples,industry and human discovery. The band began to receive more attention from critics and magazines all around the world. In 1999 they also played at the famous ProgPower festival in The Netherlands.

Their third and most famous album, The Perfect Element I was released in 2000 and received a great response from the crowd and critics, making them the second most famous progressive metal band over the world: a success confirmed by their fourth album, Remedy Lane (2002), a semi-autobiographical album written by Daniel Gildenlöw about loss, love, and life.

2004 saw the release of two different albums, an acoustic live show recorded at Eskilstuna called 12:5 where the band played most of their old famous songs rearranged, and the epic concept album about the origin of humanity and God called BE: It was the first album to divide the fan base in opinion, due to its musically experimental and philosophical nature; and perhaps also its lack of cohesive progressive metal pieces.
BE album was also released in a special DVD edition called Be: The Original Stage Production (2005). With a live CD recorded during the 2003 presentation of the album and a DVD rappresentation from the same dates.

On 21 February 2006, Kristoffer Gildenlöw was asked to leave the band due to him not being able to attend rehearsals, since he lived in Holland and the band lived in Sweden. Kristoffer has a solo album planned for the future, as well as a side project called Dial.

The new album, Scarsick, was released on January 22, 2007. It is more band oriented than BE, with Daniel Gildenlöw playing bass in the studio. Recent interviews with Daniel have revealed that Scarsick is, in fact, the second part of The Perfect Element, confirming the speculation of many fans.

A European tour to support the new album has been announced (it started February 17, 2007). The band will be playing with Simon Andersson, a new replacement bassist on this tour. On the 10th of March, after the Copenhagen show, Simon Andersson was welcomed into Pain of Salvation as a full member. The band issued this message on their website:

In May 2007 it was announced that drummer Johan Langell had decided to leave the band to spend more time with his family.

According to their website, there is a new EP “Linoleum” due in November 2009, while a double album “Road Salt” is recorded and to be released in early 2010.

Riverside is a Polish Progressive rock band. It was founded in 2001 by riends Mariusz Duda, Piotr Grudziński, Piotr Kozieradzki and Jacek Melnicki, who shared a love for progressive rock and heavy metal.Riverside can be described as a stylistic blend of atmospheric rock and metal elements, resulting in a sound similar to that of Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Dream Theater, and Tool, while still maintaining an identity of their own.

‘Indukti is an induction of five minds, a musical conglomeration designed to stimulate the imagination and draw forth exceptional experiences and unique emotions.’ - Violinist Ewa Jablonska

In September 2004 Indukti, from Warsaw, Poland, released S.U.S.A.R., the debut album under the Off Music label. While recording, the main intention of the band was to maintain as much of the concert spontaneity and energy as possible. Indukti invited Mariusz Duda from Riverside to lend his enchanting voice and Anna Faber to enrich the album with her harp skills. S.U.S.A.R. was re-released worldwide on 6 September, 2005 by Laser’s Edge. After the album’s release the band often performed concerts, was awarded the first prize in three festivals and appeared on two compilations and on the independent release which received a warm welcome by fans.

On 2 January, 2008 Indukti announced on their official site that they would start recording a new album. On 4 June of that year, the band disclosed that new music was recorded and that they would begin mixing the second album. Finally, on 29 May, 2009 Indukti announced their new album entitled Idmen, to be released 27 July, 2009 in Europe and 11 August, 2009 in North America by record label InsideOut Music.

The group invited three guest vocalists to sing on Idmen, namely Nils Frykdahl (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum), Maciej Taff (Rootwater) and Michael Luginbuehl (Prisma), leaving the instrumental character of the band’s core unaltered.

Porcupine Tree is a progressive rock band formed by Steven Wilson in 1987 in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England. Frequently associated with both psychedelic rock and progressive rock, their music has also been influenced by trance, krautrock and ambient due to Steven Wilson and Richard Barbieri's liking for the Kosmische Musik scene of the early '70s, led by bands such as Tangerine Dream, Neu! and Can. Since the early 2000s, their music has been leaning towards progressive metal.

The band are noted for their multimedia approach, with their live performances including screens displaying a different film projection to each song. This visual element was introduced during the tour for the In Absentia album, when the band started to work with Danish photographer and filmmaker Lasse Hoile, whose involvement has created a distinctive image for the band.

Despite being signed to both Roadrunner and Atlantic labels, the band have their own record label, Transmission, which they use to launch some independent releases and special editions of their albums. Their 2007 album Fear of a Blank Planet was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Surround Sound Album.

Influences

As a teenager, Wilson was a fan of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. From this starting point, his interest in music progressed on a cyclic path. When he discovered Seventies music and progressive rock, his interest in metal diminished in favour of experimental music. He later (in the 2000s) discovered bands like Gojira, Mastodon, Neurosis and Meshuggah, which restored his faith in metal music. "For a long time I couldn't find where all these creative musicians were going…", said Wilson, "and I found them, they were working in extreme metal." Shortly thereafter he went to produce three consecutive albums by Swedish progressive death metal band Opeth and this had a considerable influence in his further songwriting.

This shift in influence explains why the musical range of Porcupine Tree can be split into three phases, namely from long psychedelic and space rock pieces in early works, to shorter pop rock songs in late nineties, and darker more metal-oriented songs in the beginning of the 21st century. There is also some noticeable influence from krautrock and electronic music since Wilson likes bands such as Can, Neu!, Tangerine Dream, Squarepusher, Aphex Twin and artists like Klaus Schulze and Conrad Schnitzler among others. Wilson has also mentioned on multiple occasions that he also admires the work of American musician Trent Reznor.
